Google Custom Search Engines...and Moodle!

A teacher told me today that his biggest challenge at the beginning of the semester was keeping students only on the sites that he wanted them to search. Which of course became a catalyst for my thoughts...why not create a custom search engine that consists of only the websites that a teacher wants accessible? Google has already developed the perfect solution to this dilemma.

The only caveat is that the search engine creator must have a Google Account. I created a search engine about Turtles to demonstrate how the custom search engine could be used for guided research. Each custom search engine generates a unique link which can be given to students and/or hyperlinked from another location.

Following the creation of my search engine I then embedded it into a Moodle Course using the html block. Since Moodle is capable of accepting code within any of it's text editing windows, I also embedded it as a label within one of my topic blocks. Embedding it this way would allow teachers to have a custom search engine for each unit or topic in his/her class.

Instructions for how I created the search engine and embedded it can be found on my Moodle Mini Wiki.
